Listed Below are some of my favorite ways to enjoy Summer in the mountains.

1. Tallulah Gorge State Park- One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S., Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks, or they can obtain a permit to hike to the gorge floor (100 per day, not available during water releases). A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls.  Tightrope walkers have twice crossed the gorge, and visitors can still see towers used by Karl Wallenda.  A paved path follows an on old railroad bed, perfect for strollers and bicycles, while mountain bikers can test their skills on a challenging 10-mile trail. There is also a great Science and History Museum.

Tallulah Lake has public beach five minutes away for an afternoon swim. For more information http://www.gastateparks.org/TallulahGorge

2. Highlands Canopy Tours is located only 10 minutes North of Dillard and this is not your average Zip-Line Tour. They Have something for all ages and abilities. This is a favorite for all ages.
www.highlandscanopytour.com Reservations are highly recommended

3. Whitewater Rafting is a great way to cool off and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. The Nantahala Out Door Center offers white water experiences.. The Nantahala is best for younger children. www.noc.com for more info and as a guest of The Dillard House you will receive 10% discount.

4. The Dillard House Stables offers a great River Ride ! This is one of my children's favorite things to do. www.dillardhousestables.com

5. If outdoor adventure isn't your thing the beautiful mountain town of Highlands NC is located only 25 minutes North of Dillard. Enjoy a day of strolling down the picturesque streets of this beautiful mountain town filled with boutiques, antique stores, specialty stores, cafes and wine bars. There are great places to hike in Highlands too. check out www.highlandhiker.com for a complete list of trails and waterfalls

If you decide to visit Highlands I highly recommend visiting Dry Falls and Bascom Arts Center

6. Cherokee NC is only 45 minutes from Dillard. You can enjoy great fly-fishing, tubing down a lazy river,  or try your luck at Harrah's Casino

7. Sky Valley Golf Course is a spectacular championship mountain golf course and because of the elevation there are always cool mountain breezes.
